Chicago – December 29, 2024
President-elect Donald Trump has requested the Supreme Court to delay a potential ban on TikTok. This request is part of his efforts to find a political solution before making any final decisions.
Trump made this request while TikTok and the current Biden administration presented conflicting arguments to the court. TikTok wants the court to remove a law that could ban the app by January 19, 2025, while the government insists the law is crucial to eliminate a national security threat.
Trump, in a legal document written by his selected Solicitor General D. John Sauer, stated that he is neutral in this dispute but asked the court to postpone the January 19 deadline while the case is being reviewed.
This action is one of several ways Trump has been active in national and international politics as he prepares to take office. He has been discussing tariffs with other countries and has been involved in U.S. budget discussions.
Additionally, Trump has met with TikTok’s CEO and other leaders at his club in Florida. Despite previous attempts to ban TikTok citing security concerns, Trump now uses the platform for his campaign, aiming to appeal to young voters with engaging content.
The Supreme Court will hear more about this issue on January 10, deciding whether the law against TikTok restricts free speech.
