Chicago – February 23, 2025

President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spoke on Saturday, covering topics such as the war in Ukraine, U.S. border security, and Canada’s recent hockey victory.

According to a White House statement, the call began with both leaders congratulating their nations’ teams on the 4 Nations Face-Off championship. They praised the players’ hard work and sportsmanship.

The conversation then turned to Ukraine. Trudeau and Trump discussed an upcoming G7 meeting about the ongoing war. Trudeau agreed with Trump’s desire for peace and acknowledged that Trump is the only leader who could make it happen. Trump stated the war should never have started and wouldn’t have if he had been president at the time.

Border security was another major topic. Trump had placed tariffs on Canada due to drug trafficking concerns but paused them for 30 days. Trudeau claimed Canada has reduced fentanyl smuggling into the U.S. by 90% and said Canada’s border official would meet with U.S. border chief Tom Homan next week.

Tensions between the two leaders have risen recently, partly due to Trump’s comments about making Canada part of the U.S. Trudeau said he believes Trump is serious about this idea.
