Nightline: Supreme Court Clears Path for Trump’s Mass Deportation Plans, While Raising Due Process Concerns

The U.S. Supreme Court recently removed another obstacle to one of President Donald Trump’s key immigration policies: mass deportation. This shows the court’s support for his tough stance on immigration, although they have expressed some concerns about how he is carrying it out.

Since Trump returned to the White House in January, the Supreme Court has been asked to make emergency decisions in seven legal battles over his immigration actions. Most recently, the court allowed Trump’s administration to end temporary legal status for hundreds of thousands of migrants who were given that status by former President Joe Biden for humanitarian reasons. This happened even though there are still legal challenges in two cases.

On Friday, the Supreme Court lifted a lower court order that had stopped the revocation of “parole” for more than 500,000 migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, Haiti, and Nicaragua. Earlier in May, the court also allowed the termination of “temporary protected status” for over 300,000 Venezuelan migrants.

However, the court has also ruled in other cases that the government must treat migrants fairly, as required by the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees due process.

Kevin Johnson, an expert in immigration law at the University of California, Davis, said, “This president has been more aggressive than any in modern U.S. history in removing non-citizens from the country quickly.” He also added that no president has been as willing as Trump to deport people without giving them due process.

Because of this, the Supreme Court has had to step in and make sure the administration’s actions follow the law, even though it hasn’t always ruled against Trump’s policies. The court has a 6-3 conservative majority, which includes three justices appointed by Trump.

A White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, responded, saying, “President Trump is acting within his lawful authority to deport illegal aliens and protect the American people. While the Supreme Court has acknowledged his authority in some cases, they’ve also made new rules that could make the country less safe. We are confident in our actions and will continue working to keep Trump’s promises.”
