US President Donald Trump announced that Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement on the initial phase of a peace framework, which will facilitate the swift release of all hostages. However, several critical issues remain unresolved, including the disarmament of Hamas and the future political governance of the Gaza Strip.
In his statement, Trump highlighted the preliminary nature of the deal, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the development as a “diplomatic success” and a “national and moral victory” for Israel. In contrast, Hamas emphasized that the agreement calls for an end to hostilities in Gaza, the withdrawal of Israeli forces, the entry of humanitarian aid, and the exchange of prisoners.
The announcement came on the heels of the two-year anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 individuals and the capture of more than 250 hostages. The ongoing conflict has since claimed the lives of more than 67,000 people, the majority of whom were women and children.
