Chicago – October 02, 2025

Two men tragically lost their lives on Thursday in a horrific attack at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Manchester, where worshippers were observing Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. British police have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Jihad Al-Shamie, a British national of Syrian descent.

The assailant drove his vehicle into pedestrians before fatally stabbing a security guard. Armed police responded swiftly to the scene, fatally shooting the suspect, who was believed to be wearing a vest resembling an explosive device. A bomb disposal team was subsequently called, but authorities confirmed the device was not operational.

A disturbing video circulating on social media, verified by Reuters, shows officers shooting the suspect as another man, seemingly wearing a traditional Jewish head covering, lies on the ground in a pool of blood.

Greater Manchester Police have classified the incident as a terrorist attack. The motive remains under investigation, though authorities have stated they found no previous records indicating the suspect had been flagged by the UK’s counter-radicalisation program, Prevent.

The attack comes at a time of heightened antisemitic tensions in the UK, following the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Antisemitic incidents have reached unprecedented levels in the country.

In response, Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who cut short his participation in a European summit, held an emergency meeting in London. He promised additional security measures for the Jewish community, including increased police presence at synagogues across the country.
