BackgroundCharges and TrialInternational Response

Dr. Mahrang Baloch, a prominent Pakistani civil rights activist and 2025 Nobel Peace Prize nominee, was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 22, 2026, by an anti-terrorism court in Quetta. The conviction stems from a July 2024 protest in Gwadar during which a Frontier Corps soldier was killed, with prosecutors alleging Baloch incited the mob through provocative speech.

Background

A physician-turned-activist, Baloch founded the BYC to campaign against enforced disappearances in Balochistan province. Her family was directly affected by the issue; her father, also a political activist, went missing, and parts of his body were later returned to the family. Baloch’s legal team plans to appeal the verdict.

Charges and Trial

Baloch, along with fellow Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Sibghatullah Shah, was convicted of terrorism, sedition, and murder. Both activists were arrested in March 2025 during a sit-in protest in Quetta and have been held in detention since. Human rights organizations have condemned the trial as unfair, citing closed-door proceedings, limited access to legal counsel, and the defendants being allowed to appear only via video link, which they boycotted.

International Response

Three international rights groups—Human Rights Foundation, Freedom House, and Hindus for Human Rights—filed a petition with the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in August 2026, calling Baloch’s detention arbitrary and demanding her immediate release. Amnesty International and other organizations have described the sentencing as part of a systematic crackdown on political dissent in Balochistan, where thousands have suffered enforced disappearances over the past 15 years.
