Chicago – July 30, 2026

Hundreds of migrants have swum from Morocco to Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta, prompting the Spanish government to deploy military units to reinforce border security. Local officials said the arrivals have overwhelmed reception centers and raised fears of a wider humanitarian crisis.

According to Reuters and other outlets, more than 1,500 migrants reached Ceuta within days, many by swimming around the coastal defenses separating the enclave from Morocco. Spanish Civil Guard units, maritime rescue teams and the Red Cross have been rescuing people from the water, while authorities reported that some migrants were minors.

Ceuta’s regional leader, Juan Jesús Vivas, said the situation had become unsustainable and urged Madrid to declare an emergency. Officials also said Spain and Morocco were coordinating to return those who entered illegally as quickly as possible.

The influx underscores the pressure on Spain’s African border outposts, where dangerous sea crossings continue to claim lives even as migrants try to reach European Union territory.
