Chicago – July 31, 2026

Two days of relentless rainfall have caused widespread flooding across the U.S. Northeast, breaking precipitation records and prompting dozens of water rescues as rivers and streams overflowed. Emergency crews responded to stranded motorists, flooded homes, and residents trapped by rapidly rising waters in several states.

Officials said the intense downpours overwhelmed drainage systems, forcing road closures and disrupting public transportation. Flash flood warnings remained in effect in many areas as forecasters warned that saturated ground could increase the risk of additional flooding and landslides.

Local authorities urged residents to avoid driving through flooded roads and to follow evacuation orders where necessary. Several schools and businesses were temporarily closed as cleanup operations began.

Meteorologists attributed the severe weather to a slow-moving storm system that delivered exceptionally heavy rainfall over a short period. While conditions are expected to improve, officials warned that high river levels and lingering flood risks could continue even after the rain subsides, with damage assessments now underway.
