The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has added a historic site in the West Bank along with several ancient castles in Lebanon to its prestigious World Heritage List, despite objections raised by Israel. The decision was made during UNESCO’s latest World Heritage Committee meeting, where member states voted in favor of recognizing the cultural and historical significance of the locations.

Supporters of the listings said the sites represent invaluable parts of the region’s shared heritage and deserve international protection and preservation. They emphasized that the recognition aims to safeguard these landmarks for future generations while encouraging conservation efforts and responsible tourism.

Israel criticized the move, arguing that the designation could politicize the World Heritage process and overlook ongoing disputes surrounding the territories. The decision has once again highlighted the long-standing tensions between cultural preservation and geopolitical disagreements in the Middle East.

UNESCO maintains that World Heritage inscriptions are based on cultural, historical, and scientific value, with the primary goal of protecting sites of outstanding universal importance regardless of political circumstances.
