Chicago – July 28, 2026

The United States delegation walked out of a United Nations meeting after France criticized Washington’s human rights record during a session reviewing global human rights issues. The rare diplomatic protest underscored growing tensions between two longtime allies over international policy and human rights.

French representatives raised concerns about issues including racial inequality, criminal justice, and immigration practices in the United States, urging Washington to strengthen protections and address longstanding challenges. In response, U.S. officials rejected the criticism, arguing that the remarks were unfair and failed to acknowledge the country’s democratic institutions and ongoing efforts to improve human rights.

The U.S. delegation left the meeting in protest, describing the comments as politically motivated and inconsistent with the spirit of constructive dialogue expected at the United Nations.Despite the disagreement, both countries remain close allies on a range of security and diplomatic issues. Analysts say the incident highlights how even longstanding partners can clash over sensitive international human rights discussions.
