At least 11 people died and 47 others were injured in a crowd surge outside a cricket stadium in Bengaluru, India, on Wednesday. The tragedy occurred during celebrations for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team’s first Indian Premier League title win.
Thousands of excited fans gathered around the Chinnaswamy Stadium to cheer for the team as they arrived on a bus. Some fans climbed trees and stadium walls to get a better view. As the celebration went on, some people without tickets tried to push through the gates, leading to chaos and a dangerous situation between the stadium’s main area and the outer perimeter.
Karnataka state chief minister Siddaramaiah confirmed the deaths and injuries. Footage from the scene showed people helping the injured, with some receiving CPR. Police tried to control the crowd by using canes, which made the situation even worse.
Authorities admitted they were unprepared for the large crowd, and the stadium had given out free passes with limited numbers. Despite the incident, the celebration ceremony continued inside the stadium. Bengaluru metro services were also stopped near the stadium.
