Chicago – June 25, 2025

Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and People’s Democratic Party (PDP) President Mehbooba Mufti praised U.S. President Donald Trump today for brokering a cease-fire between Israel and Iran, stating it represented a “surrender” by both nations.

In a terse statement, Mufti highlighted Iran’s resilience, noting that despite fewer military resources, Tehran stood firm under pressure and “made the U.S. and Israel bow down” to the cease-fire terms  . She commended Iran’s ability to withstand aggressive strikes and thus “gain praise for teaching Israel a lesson”  .

The cease-fire—dubbed a “12-day war”—followed a series of escalatory moves: U.S. forces bombed Iran’s nuclear facilities, Israel launched airstrikes, and Iran retaliated with missile attacks  . Trump then stepped in, coordinating with Qatar to halt the fighting in an assertive diplomatic push, urging Israel directly through social media to stop attacks  .

Mufti’s remarks also criticized the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation’s tepid response, suggesting Muslim nations must display stronger unity  . Her comments echo wider regional concerns about military escalation in West Asia and underscore the complex dynamics between global powers and regional actors.

As Mufti framed it, the cease-fire reflects a rare moment when a relatively less powerful Iran, through steadfast resistance and diplomatic agility, compelled both Israel and U.S. to halt their campaigns. However, experts caution that without sustained dialogue, this may only be a temporary pause in a much larger geopolitical struggle.
