Tragic Loss of Diogo Jota and His Brother
Liverpool’s Portuguese forward Diogo Jota and his brother André Silva died in a car crash in northwestern Spain early Thursday. The Lamborghini they were driving veered off the road and burst into flames near the city of Zamora. According to Spanish police, evidence suggests a burst tire while overtaking might have caused the accident. Both Jota and his brother were pronounced dead at the scene.
A Promising Career Cut Short
Diogo Jota was just 28 years old and had recently married his partner of ten years, Rute Cardoso, on June 22, 2025. The couple had three children together. Jota’s death is a huge loss for Portuguese football, with the Portuguese Football Federation paying tribute to his legacy. His brother André Silva was also a footballer, playing for Penafiel in the Portuguese second division.
Tributes and Investigation
The Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro offered his condolences to Jota’s family, calling the news “unexpected and tragic.” The police are still investigating the cause of the accident, and the bodies of Jota and his brother have been taken to a forensics unit in Zamora for autopsies.
