Netanyahu to Meet Trump Amid Gaza Talks
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to meet US President Donald Trump at the White House today. The meeting comes as Israeli officials hold indirect talks with Hamas in Qatar, aiming for a US-brokered Gaza hostage-release and ceasefire deal. Trump expressed optimism about reaching a deal this week. Netanyahu believes his discussions with Trump will help advance the talks underway in Doha.
Gaza Talks Progress
The indirect talks between Israel and Hamas, mediated by Qatar and Egypt, have shown some positivity, according to an Israeli official. However, initial meetings on Sunday ended without conclusive agreements. The US-backed proposal includes a 60-day ceasefire, phased hostage release, Israeli troop withdrawals, and discussions on ending the war. Hamas demands a final end to the war before releasing hostages, while Israel insists on freeing all hostages and dismantling Hamas first.
New Middle East Diplomacy
Israeli Minister Avi Dichter expects the meeting between Netanyahu and Trump to focus on creating a “new Middle East.” This could involve normalizing ties with Lebanon, Syria, and Saudi Arabia. Netanyahu will thank Trump for the US air strikes on Iranian nuclear sites and discuss the Gaza deal. The meeting might pave the way for new diplomatic opportunities in the region following the recent Israel-Iran conflict.
