President Donald Trump, 79, was recently diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency after a medical checkup due to swelling in his legs. The White House released a statement on Thursday, saying Trump underwent a detailed examination, including tests to check his blood vessels.
His doctor, Captain Sean Barbabella, explained that the tests showed chronic venous insufficiency, a common and harmless condition, especially in people over 70. This condition happens when valves in the veins don’t work properly, causing blood to pool in the legs.
Trump noticed mild swelling in his lower legs over the past few weeks, which led to the tests. The results showed there were no signs of serious conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or arterial disease, and his other health tests came back normal. Trump also had an echocardiogram, which showed no signs of heart issues or kidney problems.
Chronic venous insufficiency is common among older adults and can cause symptoms like swelling, aching, and varicose veins. While the condition can sometimes require treatment, it is generally not serious.
Dr. Jeremy Faust, a medical expert from Harvard, explained that this is a normal part of aging, especially for someone like Trump, who has been overweight. He also noted that it’s important to check for more serious issues when symptoms appear, which is what happened in Trump’s case.
