Chicago – September 01, 2025

President Donald Trump has defended his decision to allow 600,000 Chinese students to get visas to study in the U.S., despite some backlash from his supporters.

In an interview with the Daily Caller, Trump explained that banning these students would be “insulting” and said the move could help smaller universities. This decision comes as trade talks with China continue.

Some of Trump’s supporters, especially from the Maga wing of the Republican Party, have expressed confusion. Fox News host Laura Ingraham said, “Those are 600,000 spots that American kids won’t get.” Trump ally Laura Loomer also criticized the move on social media, calling the students “Communist spies.”

Despite the criticism, Trump argues that Chinese students bring money to the U.S. and that denying them visas would hurt relations with China. The White House confirmed that the 600,000 visas will be issued over the next two years, similar to past years. Trump also stated that he doesn’t expect anything in return for allowing these students into the country.
