Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered Estonian airspace without authorization on Friday and stayed for approximately 12 minutes, marking an unprecedentedly bold violation, according to Estonia’s government. NATO responded swiftly by scrambling Italian F-35 jets stationed in Estonia to intercept and escort the Russian aircraft out. The incursion took place near Vaindloo Island over the Gulf of Finland, about 100 kilometers from Tallinn.
Estonia’s Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna condemned the breach, calling it the most audacious of four Russian airspace violations this year. He emphasized that Russia’s repeated aggressive provocations demand increased political and economic pressure from the international community. Estonia also summoned the Russian chargé d’affaires to formally protest the violation.
This incident occurred shortly after joint Russian-Belarusian military exercises and amid broader regional tensions, including recent Russian drone incursions into Polish and Romanian airspace. NATO spokesperson Allison Hart described Russia’s actions as reckless and underscored NATO’s readiness and ability to defend its member nations.
Estonia is considering invoking NATO’s Article 4, which calls for consultations whenever a member’s security is threatened. This episode highlights escalating security concerns on NATO’s eastern flank.
