The United States said on Friday that it will take away the visa of Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro after he told American soldiers not to follow orders from President Donald Trump. The move adds more tension between Washington and Bogota.
Petro made the comments outside the United Nations headquarters in New York while speaking to a crowd supporting Palestine. He asked for a global army stronger than the US to help “free Palestine” and told US soldiers not to “point their rifles at humanity.”
“Disobey Trump. Obey humanity,” Petro said in a video shared on social media.
At the UN General Assembly, Petro also accused Trump of being “complicit in genocide” in Gaza, where Israel has stepped up attacks on Gaza City. Petro has long clashed with Trump on issues like migration and drug trafficking.
Colombia’s Caracol Radio reported that Petro had already boarded a plane to leave the US when the State Department announced that his visa was canceled.
