Chicago – September 28, 2025

At least 40 people lost their lives during a political rally in Tamil Nadu, India, officials confirmed. The tragic incident happened on Saturday in the Karur district, where a huge crowd had gathered to hear actor-turned-politician Vijay speak.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin said the victims included nine children, 17 women, and 13 men. Around 51 others are being treated in hospitals.

Police said the rally was meant for about 10,000 people, but over 20,000 showed up. As Vijay was speaking, the crowd suddenly surged, causing chaos. Many people fainted, and his speech had to be stopped. Authorities have filed a case against three senior members of Vijay’s TVK party for negligence and possible homicide.

The government announced compensation of one million rupees ($11,300; £8,400) for each family who lost a loved one. An inquiry is also being launched into the incident.

Vijay shared a heartfelt message online, saying his heart was “broken” and he was filled with “sorrow and pain.” He expressed deep condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for those who were injured to recover soon.

Deadly crowd crushes are unfortunately common in India. Earlier this year, similar tragedies occurred at the Kumbh Mela festival and outside a cricket stadium.
