President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood together at the White House on Monday to talk about a new peace plan that could help end the war in Gaza and bring home the remaining hostages.
“We are very close, maybe even closer than that,” Trump said during a press conference with Netanyahu. He also thanked the Israeli leader, saying, “Bibi has really done a great job.”
The White House shared details of its 20-point peace plan before the meeting. The plan calls for an immediate stop to the fighting, more aid for people in Gaza, and the release of all Israeli hostages. It also includes the start of a “Trump economic development plan” to rebuild Gaza. This project would create a special economic zone, giving Palestinians better trade opportunities.
This announcement comes nearly two years after Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel and just days after more countries recognized a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly.
So far, Hamas has not agreed to the proposal and has pushed back on some of its measures. Unlike some of Trump’s earlier ideas that suggested moving Palestinians, this plan encourages them to stay in Gaza and “help build a better future.”
