Chicago – Janaury 10, 2026
The Norwegian Nobel Institute has firmly stated that the Nobel Peace Prize cannot be transferred, shared, or revoked following Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado’s public suggestion to give it to U.S. President Donald Trump. Machado, the 2025 laureate honored for her fight against Venezuela’s dictatorship, expressed willingness during a January 5 Fox News interview to “share” the award with Trump, crediting his role in supporting democratic transition.
Official Stance
Institute spokesperson Jørgen Watne emphasized the prize’s finality: once awarded, it belongs solely to the laureate and stands for all time. Nobel Foundation statutes prohibit reallocation, limiting joint awards to three recipients decided at announcement. This clarification addresses speculation fueled by Machado’s remarks and Trump’s acceptance comments.
Venezuela Context
Machado, barred from the 2024 election and in hiding, dedicated the prize partly to Trump upon its October 2025 reveal. She advocates opposition-led transition over Maduro allies, amid her inability to attend Oslo ceremonies due to travel bans.
