The Justice Department on Friday ended its investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, a move that could clear the path for President Donald Trump’s nominee, Kevin Warsh, to advance toward confirmation as the next Fed chair. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro said her office was closing the case after the Federal Reserve’s inspector general was asked to review the building cost overruns.
The probe had become a political flashpoint because Republican Senator Thom Tillis had said he would block Fed nominees until the investigation was resolved. Court proceedings had also undercut the case, with a judge saying prosecutors had produced “essentially zero evidence” of criminal conduct.
The decision eases pressure on the Fed’s leadership transition as Powell’s term nears its end and Warsh seeks Senate approval.
