Chicago – May 14, 2026
U.S. Border Patrol Chief Michael Banks has abruptly resigned, adding to a wave of turnover among senior immigration officials in President Donald Trump’s administration, according to Reuters and other U.S. news outlets.
Banks, who led the Border Patrol since January 2025, gave no public reason for his departure. Reuters reported that his exit comes amid several other leadership changes across the Department of Homeland Security, including planned and recent departures tied to immigration enforcement.
His resignation follows months of upheaval inside the government’s border apparatus as the administration intensifies its immigration crackdown. NBC News and Reuters both noted that Banks was a longtime Border Patrol veteran and that officials have not yet named a successor.
Analysts say the churn underscores the pressure on agencies central to Trump’s border agenda, where leadership changes have accelerated even as enforcement remains a top political priority.
