Chicago – May 18, 2026

Pakistan has reportedly deployed 8,000 troops, a squadron of fighter jets and an air defence system to Saudi Arabia under a mutual defence pact, according to Reuters and other outlets citing Pakistani and security officials. The move comes as tensions tied to the Iran conflict have raised regional security concerns, while Islamabad continues to present itself as a mediator in the crisis.

Reuters said the package includes about 16 JF-17 fighter aircraft, drone squadrons and a Chinese HQ-9 air defence system, with the equipment operated by Pakistani personnel and financed by Saudi Arabia. Officials quoted in the report described the deployment as combat-capable, although some personnel are said to have advisory and training duties.

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia signed a mutual defence pact in September 2025, deepening a long-standing security partnership. The reported deployment underscores how that agreement is now shaping military coordination at a time of heightened regional uncertainty.
