Chicago – May 20, 2026

Former President Donald Trump scored another victory over a high-profile GOP dissenter Tuesday as Rep. Thomas Massie lost the Republican primary in Kentucky’s 4th District to Trump‑backed challenger Ed Gallrein. Massie, long one of the House’s most outspoken critics of Trump on issues from foreign policy to oversight, conceded after Gallrein led by roughly 54–55 percent to Massie’s mid‑40s share as returns were reported.

The contest became one of the most expensive House primaries on record, with pro‑Trump groups and outside donors spending heavily to boost Gallrein, a retired Navy SEAL who ran as a staunch Trump ally. Supporters of Massie argued his independent streak—opposing additional foreign interventions and some foreign aid—reflected fiscal conservatism and principle, but that message failed to overcome the president’s influence among Republican primary voters in the heavily red district.

Gallrein is expected to be the heavy favorite in the November general election in a district that has trended reliably Republican, and Massie’s defeat underscores the shrinking room inside the GOP for lawmakers who break publicly with Trump.
