Chicago – May 28, 2026

The United States has imposed new sanctions on Iranian entities accused of attempting to control commercial shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route. The sanctions target an Iranian agency and several individuals allegedly linked to efforts to interfere with maritime operations and threaten international vessels in the region.

According to U.S. officials, the measures are aimed at countering Iran’s growing influence over shipping lanes used for transporting oil and commercial goods. The United States said the sanctioned network was involved in monitoring, directing, and pressuring ships passing through the narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman.

The United States described the action as part of broader efforts to protect freedom of navigation and maintain stability in the region. The Iran has repeatedly warned foreign powers against interfering in Gulf affairs and maintains that its activities are aimed at regional security.

The Strait of Hormuz handles a significant share of the world’s oil shipments, making tensions in the area closely watched by global energy markets and international governments.
