Claims that up to 30 lakh voters could be removed from Telangana’s electoral rolls have triggered political debate, although election authorities have not confirmed any such figure.
The controversy emerged during the ongoing voter-list revision process being conducted by the election machinery to identify duplicate, shifted, deceased, or otherwise ineligible voters. Political parties have raised concerns that a large number of legitimate voters could be affected if the exercise is not carried out carefully.
Officials from the election administration have stated that voters whose names do not appear in older electoral rolls will not be automatically deleted. Instead, individuals will be given an opportunity to establish their eligibility through approved identity and residence documents before any final decision is made. Reports indicate that the revision process is intended to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls rather than reduce the number of registered voters.
Election authorities have also emphasized that only voters found to be deceased, permanently shifted, duplicated, or otherwise ineligible are liable for removal after due verification. Previous voter-roll cleanup exercises in the state resulted in the deletion of tens of thousands of duplicate entries, but no official estimate has been released suggesting that 30 lakh voters are likely to be removed.
Opposition parties and civil society groups have called for transparency in the revision process, arguing that any large-scale changes to voter rolls should be subject to public scrutiny. They have urged authorities to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised due to documentation issues or administrative errors.
The Election Commission’s state officials maintain that the revision follows established procedures and includes safeguards for voters to verify and correct their details before the final electoral roll is published.
As the exercise continues, the focus is likely to remain on balancing electoral roll accuracy with the protection of eligible citizens’ voting rights. At present, the claim that 30 lakh voters are set to be deleted remains unverified by official data.
