Padma Shri Prof. Mahdi Hasan remains one of the most distinguished figures in the history of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), remembered for his exceptional contributions to medical science and institutional development. An eminent anatomist, Prof. Hasan chose to return to India despite opportunities abroad, dedicating his career to advancing medical education at AMU.
Joining the university in 1963, he played a pivotal role in shaping the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC), where he served as Principal, Chief Medical Superintendent, and Dean of the Faculty of Medicine. His visionary leadership led to the establishment of the Interdisciplinary Brain Research Centre in 1977, placing AMU on the global neuroscience map.
A pioneer in his field, Prof. Hasan was the first Indian anatomist trained in Electron Microscopy and Gerontology in Germany. He later declined German citizenship to serve his homeland. Over his career, he published more than 100 research papers and authored key academic texts, including Diagnostic Histology.
Honored with the Padma Shri in 2012, Prof. Hasan’s legacy continues to inspire generations in science, education, and service.
