Chicago – June 25, 2026
A series of victories by candidates endorsed by Zohran Mamdani in New York Democratic primaries has been widely viewed as a setback for pro-Israel political forces within the Democratic Party. The wins have strengthened the influence of progressive and pro-Palestinian voices ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Among the successful candidates were Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander and Claire Valdez, all of whom campaigned on progressive policies and have expressed criticism of US military support for Israel. Two incumbent lawmakers were defeated in the contests, highlighting growing dissatisfaction among some Democratic voters with the party establishment.
Supporters described the results as a “political earthquake,” arguing that they reflect changing attitudes toward the Israel-Palestine conflict, particularly among younger and progressive voters. Critics, however, cautioned against viewing the New York outcomes as representative of national Democratic sentiment.
The victories are expected to intensify debate within the Democratic Party over its future direction and Middle East policy.
