Chicago – June 26, 2026
A United States federal judge has declined to immediately dismiss criminal charges against Indian billionaire Gautam Adani, delivering an unexpected procedural setback to both the defendant and the Department of Justice. The judge instead ordered prosecutors to provide, by July 13, “each reason” for seeking dismissal along with “sufficient factual support for each basis” — a rare and pointed demand directed at the DOJ.
The development comes weeks after the U.S. Department of Justice moved in May 2026 to drop criminal fraud charges against Adani and several officials of his conglomerate, shortly after the Adani Group reached a settlement in a separate civil matter. Adani’s legal team had urged the court to grant the dismissal without delay.reuters+1
Bloomberg and Reuters report that the judge’s intervention signals heightened judicial scrutiny over the DOJ’s handling of the high-profile case, which has drawn global attention given Adani’s stature as one of Asia’s wealthiest individuals.
The case remains active pending the DOJ’s response.
