Russia launched a series of deadly missile and drone strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, killing and injuring civilians as emergency crews raced to rescue people trapped under damaged buildings. The attacks came on the eve of U.S. President Donald Trump’s departure for a critical NATO summit, where the war in Ukraine and the alliance’s future security commitments are expected to dominate discussions.
Ukrainian officials said residential areas and civilian infrastructure were among the targets, describing the assault as one of the latest large-scale attacks on the capital. Air defense systems intercepted several incoming drones and missiles, but falling debris and direct hits caused significant destruction across multiple districts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the strikes and renewed calls for stronger international military support and air defense systems. NATO leaders are expected to discuss additional assistance for Ukraine as concerns grow over Russia’s continued aerial offensive and regional security.
