Senior United Nations officials have urged Western governments to strengthen diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan, warning that continued isolation could push the country toward greater instability and humanitarian hardship.
The officials stressed that constructive dialogue with Afghanistan’s de facto authorities is essential to address worsening economic conditions, security concerns, and the growing needs of millions of vulnerable people. They argued that limited international engagement has failed to resolve key challenges and has instead contributed to economic stagnation and reduced access to essential services. The UN emphasized that renewed cooperation should focus on humanitarian assistance, economic recovery, education, and the protection of human rights, particularly for women and girls.
While acknowledging concerns over the Taliban’s policies, officials said sustained communication is necessary to encourage positive change and prevent further deterioration. They also warned that prolonged instability in Afghanistan could have wider regional consequences, including increased displacement, security risks, and cross-border humanitarian pressures affecting neighboring countries and the broader international community.
