Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Richard Blumenthal are urging the Securities and Exchange Commission to investigate President Donald Trump’s $TRUMP memecoin, calling it a possible “illegal scam.” The senators said the token may have enriched Trump while leaving retail investors exposed to steep losses, with critics citing the coin’s sharp price collapse and possible conflicts of interest.
In their letter to SEC Chair Paul Atkins, the lawmakers argued that the project could have involved fraud or improper promotion tied to the president’s office. The request lands amid broader Democratic pressure on Trump’s crypto ventures, which have drawn scrutiny over ethics, market integrity, and investor protection.
The SEC previously said most memecoins generally fall outside securities oversight, but Warren and Blumenthal want the agency to examine whether Trump’s token crossed legal lines. The outcome could intensify the debate over how far U.S. regulators can police politically linked digital assets.
