Chicago – August 03, 2026

Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias has officially announced his candidacy for mayor of Chicago, becoming one of the highest-profile contenders in the 2027 election. He launched his campaign with a video and a rally in Bronzeville, calling for stronger leadership and promising a more effective and accountable City Hall.

Giannoulias said his campaign will focus on improving public safety, reducing bureaucracy, modernizing city government, and promoting economic growth. He told supporters that Chicago deserves leadership that is both competent and capable of bringing people together to address the city’s challenges.

The announcement adds another major name to an increasingly competitive mayoral contest. Incumbent Mayor Brandon Johnson has not yet confirmed whether he will seek a second term, while several other prominent Democrats are also expected to compete.

Political analysts say Giannoulias enters the race as a leading contender, backed by strong fundraising, name recognition, and support from several labor organizations.
