Chicago – August 04, 2026

Health officials have confirmed the first U.S. deaths linked to the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak, with two fatalities reported in Michigan. According to state authorities, both individuals had significant underlying health conditions that may have been worsened by the parasitic infection. The deaths mark the first confirmed fatalities associated with the current outbreak, which has become the largest recorded in the United States.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the Cyclospora parasite and is typically spread through contaminated food or water. Common symptoms include prolonged diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and loss of appetite.

While the illness is usually treatable and rarely fatal, it can pose serious risks to older adults and people with weakened immune systems.

Federal and state health officials are investigating the source of the outbreak, with a portion of cases linked to contaminated iceberg lettuce imported from Mexico. Thousands of confirmed and suspected infections have been reported across multiple states, prompting renewed calls for stronger food safety measures and continued public health surveillance.
