The United States, South Korea and Japan will conduct a five-day trilateral military exercise next month, despite rising tensions after North Korea vowed “serious, immediate and powerful” retaliation against what it called U.S. hostilities.

Freedom Edge exercise set for September

Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff announced that the 2026 Freedom Edge drill will run from 7–11 September in international waters east and south of Jeju Island. Described as defensive, the multi-domain exercise aims to improve joint responses to North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats while promoting regional peace and stability.

Launched in 2024, Freedom Edge integrates simultaneous air, naval and cyber operations, including ballistic missile defence, anti-submarine warfare, surveillance and maritime interdiction.

North Korea’s escalating rhetoric

The announcement came a day after Pyongyang’s Foreign Ministry accused Washington of hostile moves, including a possible sale of air-to-air missiles to Seoul, and warned of a strong response across “different spheres.” North Korea has repeatedly condemned the trilateral drills as a “reckless show of strength” and claimed they are intended to pressure China and Russia.

The exercise proceeds even as President Donald Trump recently ordered cuts to separate U.S.–South Korea drills in a bid to encourage dialogue with Kim Jong Un, underscoring the delicate balance between deterrence and diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula.
