Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthi group launched a major wave of missile and drone attacks against southern Saudi Arabia on Tuesday, September 8, escalating tensions across the region.
Saudi authorities said 73 people, including women and children, were wounded in attacks targeting civilian and economic sites in Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jazan and Najran. Several energy facilities were hit, causing fires and forcing a temporary halt to some operations.
The Houthis claimed responsibility, saying the attacks were retaliation for Saudi military strikes in Yemen. Saudi officials condemned the assault as a dangerous escalation and vowed to take measures to defend the kingdom’s sovereignty.
The attacks have also raised concerns about global energy supplies. Oil prices climbed as markets reacted to the possibility of further disruption in the region. Analysts warn that continued fighting could threaten important shipping routes and deepen the wider Middle East conflict.
