The Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program, which has been around since the 1990s, is now facing major challenges. This program helps people from countries that are too dangerous to return to by allowing them to stay and work in the U.S. Recently, President Biden has added countries like Venezuela, Haiti, and Afghanistan to this list, helping many people stay safely in the U.S.
However, the future of TPS is uncertain because some politicians want to change or even end it. The program was a big topic in 2024, especially among Republicans who are worried about many people coming to the U.S. through a special app and a program that lets 30,000 migrants from four countries come to the U.S. each month. These migrants could also get TPS if they arrive before their country is re-designated.
J.D. Vance, a political figure, criticized TPS by saying it prevents the government from sending people back to their countries. He believes the program should be stopped. Other conservatives agree that TPS shouldn’t keep being extended because it’s supposed to be temporary.
Sen.-elect Jim Banks has suggested a new law that would make Congress approve TPS every 12 months and also approve any extensions. Former President Trump has also talked about starting a large deportation effort and making other changes to immigration rules. These discussions and proposals show that TPS could see significant changes soon.
