Chicago – January 04, 2025

The week-long state funeral for former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away at 100 on December 29, 2023, began on Saturday. The ceremonies are honoring his long life and important work, from his humble beginnings in Plains, Georgia, to his role as the 39th President of the United States and a respected global humanitarian.

On Saturday morning, people gathered in downtown Plains to pay their respects by placing flowers at the base of Carter’s monument. The tribute also included hard hats from Habitat for Humanity, the nonprofit Carter helped build, with heartfelt messages written on them. One message read, “God bless you, Mr. President.”

Carter’s cause of death was not specified. His passing came just over a month after the death of his wife, Rosalynn Carter, on November 19, 2023. She was 96 years old and passed away peacefully at their home in Plains, surrounded by family, just days after being placed in hospice care.

The funeral services will celebrate Carter’s legacy and his lifelong dedication to service and peace.
