Chicago – January 06, 2025

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a top Republican, recently raised concerns about the feasibility of President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrants in the United States.

During an interview on NBC’s Meet the Press, Thune questioned whether it would be possible to carry out such a large-scale deportation.

Trump has promised to lead the “largest deportation program in American history,” aiming to remove at least 11 million immigrants who are in the U.S. without proper authorization. However, experts warn that this plan may be difficult and expensive to execute.

The American Immigration Council estimates that deporting 1 million people each year could cost around $88 billion annually. In addition, carrying out such a massive operation would require significant increases in law enforcement staff, detention centers, and courtrooms.

There are many people in the U.S. without legal status, and their situations vary widely. Some entered the country illegally, while others overstayed temporary visas.

Many have no criminal history. In total, around 1.3 million people are already facing deportation orders but remain in the U.S. due to resource shortages or other issues, like other countries refusing to accept their return.
