President-elect Donald Trump has announced plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. Trump made the statement at a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, saying the new name is “beautiful” and “appropriate”.

Trump did not provide details on when or how the change would be made, but indicated that it is because the US does most of the work in the Gulf and it is “ours”. He also mentioned that the name change is related to issues such as trade imbalance with Mexico, illegal immigration, and concerns about drugs entering the US.

This is not the first time the idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico has been proposed. In 2012, a former Mississippi legislator introduced a bill to change the name to the Gulf of America for official purposes within the state of Mississippi. However, the bill was meant as a joke and did not pass.

It is unclear why Trump has decided to propose the name change now. The Gulf of Mexico is a large body of water that borders several countries, including the US, Mexico, and Cuba. Any name change would likely require international cooperation and agreement.
