Scientists and researchers nationwide oppose President Donald Trump’s plan to cut funding for research institutions. His proposal would limit the money universities receive for facilities and administrative costs to just 15% of federal research grants.
In response, academic unions are organizing a “National Day of Action” on Wednesday, Feb. 19. Scientists, researchers, and their supporters plan to protest outside the Health and Human Services (HHS) Department building and at universities nationwide.
Trump’s funding cap has been criticized by both Republicans and Democrats, who argue it could harm America’s leadership in scientific research. Critics say the limit will restrict important studies, slow medical discoveries, and weaken the United States’ position as a global science leader.
According to an RSVP form, union members from Johns Hopkins, George Washington University, and the University of Maryland are expected to participate in the protests. An online advertisement also listed other universities holding demonstrations, including Rutgers, the University of Washington, Oregon Health & Science University, and the University of Illinois–Chicago.
