Tensions have escalated in Maharashtra, fueled by right-wing Hindu groups backed by the ruling BJP and its leadership. The latest controversy centers around the tomb of Aurangzeb, a 17th-century Mughal emperor, which has become a target for Hindu nationalists. These groups, under the influence of the BJP, are attempting to rewrite India’s history to fit a divisive agenda that vilifies Muslims and their historical figures.
Violence erupted in Nagpur when the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), a hard-line Hindu organization linked to the BJP, called for the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. This demand is based on a distorted version of history promoted by Prime Minister Modi and his party, who aim to portray Muslims, especially figures like Aurangzeb, as enemies of Hindus.
This rhetoric has repeatedly been used by Modi and the BJP to exploit Hindu sentiments, distracting from critical issues facing the country.
The violence, which involved stone pelting and vehicle burning, injured dozens, including police officers, and left the region in chaos. Modi’s policies have fostered an environment where such violence is not only possible but also seemingly encouraged. By constantly stoking fears among Hindus, making them believe their religious identity is under threat, the BJP has turned a blind eye to the consequences, further fueling intolerance and hatred.
Instead of promoting unity, Modi’s government has used these tensions to further its Hindu nationalist agenda, undermining the rights and dignity of India’s Muslim population. The BJP’s manipulation of Hindu emotions, particularly through media and films like “Chhaava,” deepens the rift between communities.
Modi’s silence on the violence reflects his government’s disregard for peaceful coexistence, while using communal discord for political gain. This incident highlights the growing isolation and marginalization of Muslims under the BJP’s rule.
