The University of Massachusetts Amherst announced on Friday that five international students had their visas cancelled by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
In a statement, UMass Chancellor Javier Reyes explained that the university was not informed directly about the visa revocations and only discovered the changes after checking the federal SEVIS database. He shared the news late on Friday after learning about the visa issues that evening. “We are monitoring the situation closely,” Reyes added.
UMass Amherst is the largest university in Massachusetts’ public system.
Earlier this week, Minnesota State University in Mankato also reported that five international students had their visas revoked after a similar check of the SEVIS database. This action came after a Turkish student at the University of Minnesota was detained for a DUI offense.
Other universities across the U.S., including Arizona State, Cornell, North Carolina State, the University of Oregon, the University of Texas, and the University of Colorado, have also faced visa revocations without prior notice.
