Chicago – July 23, 2026

Amish Shah has won the Democratic primary for Arizona’s congressional seat, defeating the party establishment’s preferred candidate in a closely watched contest that highlighted divisions within the state’s Democratic Party. Shah, a physician and former state legislator, built his campaign around expanding affordable healthcare, protecting reproductive rights and lowering the cost of living. His victory was fueled by strong grassroots support and a campaign that emphasized direct voter outreach rather than relying on party leadership. The result is viewed as a setback for Democratic leaders, who had backed a rival candidate with greater institutional support and fundraising.

Political analysts said Shah’s win reflects growing voter demand for candidates with strong local ties and independent political identities. Shah will now advance to the general election, where he is expected to face a competitive Republican challenger in a race that could influence control of the U.S. House of Representatives. Both parties are expected to invest heavily in the battleground district ahead of the November election.
