Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports beginning September 8, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced on Saturday, after last-ditch trade negotiations with Washington collapsed late Friday. The move escalates a fresh North American trade war, with Ottawa vowing to match new US duties “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers, farmers and businesses.

Tariffs follow US 50% duties on Canadian exports

The Canadian measures come hours after the Trump administration enforced 50% tariffs on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, including wine, furniture, dairy, cement, clothing, fishing rods and hockey equipment. US officials say the levies target what Washington calls discriminatory Canadian trade practices around automobiles, alcohol and dairy.

Targeted sectors and next steps

Carney said Canada’s response will be “focused,” concentrating on sectors such as steel, dairy, household appliances, agricultural machinery, pulp and paper, and electronics, with detailed product lists to be released in the coming days. Ottawa also plans to announce support measures next week for Canadian industries hit by the new US duties. With no further talks scheduled, both sides are blaming the other for the breakdown, raising the risk of higher prices and supply disruptions across integrated supply chains.
