Abdul El-Sayed has won Michigan’s Democratic U.S. Senate primary, giving the party’s progressive wing a major boost in a marquee battleground contest. NBC News projected the victory after a tight race against Rep. Haley Stevens, who had support from Democratic leaders and pro-Israel groups.
El-Sayed, a former public health official, overcame a massive outside-spending gap and turned the contest into a referendum on the party’s direction, with his campaign emphasizing health care, the economy and opposition to unconditional military aid to Israel. Reuters reported that the race was the first statewide primary win for a progressive in a state won by Donald Trump in 2024.
The result sets up a November showdown with former Rep. Mike Rogers for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. Democrats see Michigan as one of their best chances to reclaim the Senate majority, making El-Sayed’s general-election campaign a test of whether the party’s left flank can win in a competitive Midwest state.
