The Trump administration has returned about $100 billion in “Liberation Day” tariff payments to businesses after the Supreme Court ruled that the duties were unlawful, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection filings cited by multiple news outlets. The refunds represent roughly 60% of the $165 billion collected under the tariff program.
The repayments come after the court found that the administration lacked the authority to use emergency powers to impose the tariffs. U.S. Customs has been processing claims through its CAPE system, with hundreds of thousands of declarations already submitted by importers.
Still, billions of dollars remain outstanding. BBC reported that about $29 billion in potential refunds are still under review, while another $1.6 billion is waiting on importers to provide banking details.
Major companies have already seen sizable reimbursements, including Amazon, which said it received about $600 million in refunds during the second quarter.
