Radioactive Contamination Found at Iran’s Natanz Nuclear Facility
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that Israel’s recent strike on Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility has caused radioactive and chemical contamination inside the site. Director-General Rafael Mariano Grossi stated that while radiation levels outside the facility are normal, there’s a risk of radiation exposure if uranium is inhaled or ingested inside the facility.

Managing the Risk and Assessing Damage
Grossi emphasized that the risk can be managed with proper protective measures, such as respiratory protection devices. The IAEA has confirmed that the contamination is currently contained within the facility and hasn’t affected the surrounding environment or population. Israel’s strike destroyed the above-ground section of the Natanz facility, but underground enrichment units seem intact. However, power outages may have impacted centrifuges.

International Concerns and Next Steps
The incident has raised concerns about nuclear safety and security, with Grossi calling for maximum restraint to avoid further escalation. The IAEA is closely monitoring the situation, and Grossi has expressed willingness to visit Iran to assess the damage directly. Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation has downplayed the severity, stating that only minor damage occurred and there’s no threat to public health.
