Assassination Attempt on Donald Trump
A year ago, on July 13, 2024, former President Donald Trump survived an assassination attempt at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old gunman, fired eight shots from an AR-15-style rifle, grazing Trump’s right ear and killing one attendee, Corey Comperatore. Two others were critically injured before a Secret Service sniper killed Crooks.

Security Failures and Investigations
The incident raised serious questions about the Secret Service’s planning and security measures. A nearby rooftop with a clear line of sight to Trump was left unguarded, allowing Crooks to take aim. Multiple investigations have detailed the breakdowns that day, and the agency has come under intense scrutiny. Another incident in September, where a gunman camped outside one of Trump’s golf courses, further highlighted security concerns.

Aftermath and Reforms
Under new leadership hired by Trump, the Secret Service has been working to address these problems. However, key questions remain unanswered, including what motivated the shooter and how to prevent similar incidents in the future. Retired agent Bobby McDonald described the attempt as a “wake-up call” for the Secret Service, prompting reforms to improve protection for public figures.
